Lessons from professional sport to the office…
Here are 5 things I learnt from professional football and cricket that I apply to my consultancy work.
1 Team wins beat talent wins
The best results come when everyone understands the game plan and plays for the team, not their own stats.
In business that means aligning people around shared goals so individuals pull in the same direction rather than competing for credit.
2 Every role matters
From the striker to the kit man and match day staff, small details decide big outcomes.
In consultancy I treat every touchpoint as important, from front line teams to back office processes, because any weak link can cost you the result.
3 Hard work as a non negotiable
Elite environments normalise hard work, turning intensity and preparation into a habit rather than a push.
I bring that same expectation into projects, focusing on preparation, follow through and doing the unglamorous work that actually moves the needle.
4 Strategy first, tactics second
Top teams are built around a clear identity and strategy long before they choose formations or field settings.
In business I start with positioning, objectives and margins, then build the sales, marketing and operational tactics to fit that bigger picture.
5 Review, learn, improve
After every match there is analysis, feedback and an immediate focus on the next game.
I apply the same cycle with clients, using honest reviews and data to adjust quickly rather than waiting for problems to become a full blown crisis.
